Camp High Five was founded in March of 2000 by Ms. Bonnie Minter (who then worked as a Nurse Practitioner at Grady Hospital’s Infectious Disease Program Clinic) to create a traditional camping experience for HIV affected youth. Camp High Five strives to provide an atmosphere that is free from the stigma, fear, secrets, and worries associated with living with HIV. Eligible campers are ages 6-16, and are either HIV positive or have an immediate family member who is HIV infected
The development of a camping program for children living with HIV/AIDS is based on the evidence that HIV/AIDS greatly influences the psychosocial adjustment of children affected by the virus.
There are no paid staff at Camp High Five. Counselors and Medical Staff provide their services at no cost to the campers. Most importantly, children will have the opportunity to be around other children with the same life experiences and will not have to feel different or strange. Camp may be the first time that these children have been around other children living with HIV.
